Blessed are the peacemakers

President Bush has visited some of the most sacred and powerfully moving sites in the Holy Land over the past few days. He’s clearly felt the impact of being there, at each site. He’s on a strategic trip to start new peace talks between the historically warring sides, but it seems to be a personal pilgrimage as well.

My friend, Fr. Peter Vasko, forwarded this report from the Custodia Terrae Sanctae, the Franciscan Custos of the Holy Land. I was glad to see him accompanying the president at these sites, knowing what a good guide Fr. Vasko is, in the spiritual and temporal order.

At every stage of this visit, Fra Peter Vasko read a passage from the Bible concerning the site of Capharnaum in English to the President. Both Mr. Bush and Condoleezza Rice listened very closely to the Holy Scriptures and to the explanations they were given, without hesitation to ask for further information.

The atmosphere on this glorious day was relaxed. The security service that accompanies the President clearly gives him peace of mind.
