Do the right thing

Our moral compass appears to be broken.

Spreading abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research and defending cloning….among the most obvious signs.

The latest evidence of the breakdown is the ACORN scandal that erupted last week when two young adult citizens took it upon themselves to investigate the organization’s practices, since powerful politicians and media have failed to. What they revealed through a series of undercover video was shocking….multiple occasions of ACORN workers at several random offices across the country advising them on how they could best achieve their stated goal of setting up a house of prostitution, use underage El Salvadorean girls for sex-trafficking, and a worker threw in advice on how to hide the profits from government taxation.

Even late night comedian Jon Stewart ripped the media for burying the story.

“The bad news is that ACORN appears to be a criminal organization that aids and abets criminals and get millions of dollars in taxpayer money!” Stewart said, after highlighting the clips on his show.

Stewart joined conservatives in their criticism of the media, wondering why major media outlets failed to investigate ACORN or report on the investigative videos.

“Where were the real reporters on this story…Where the hell were you?” Stewart screamed into the camera,

“You’re telling me that two kids from the cast of High School Musical 3 can break this story with a video camera and their grandmother’s chinchilla coat, and you’ve got nothin’?” he asked.

“I’m a fake journalist, and I’m embarrassed these guys scooped me,” he added, “Let’s get to work people!”

They couldn’t avoid it when Congress was forced to address the growing scandal. But the reporting of elite liberal media has been carefully constructed.

There is no moral abiguity here and the right thing to do should not be a partisan issue. That shouldn’t even have to be said.

But look at the major attention two New York Times writers have recently brought to the injustices and abuses women and girls are suffering globally, much of it through sex-trafficking. The Times featured an excerpt of their book in this lengthy special issue ‘Saving the World’s Women’. Right in the lede, they cited sex-trafficking as one of the brutalities inflicted on girls and woman, ‘the paramount moral challenge of this century.’

But when the ACORN story escalated, here’s how the Times reported it, through congressional involvement.

The House voted Thursday to deny any federal money to the nationwide community organizing group Acorn, and the Senate reaffirmed its opposition as well after embarrassing videos of a few of the group’s workers became public.

To call them “embarrassing videos” diminishes their devastating revelations.

It was approved by a bipartisan vote of 345 to 75, showing that Democrats also increasingly see a political liability in Acorn…

Wait….it shows that 75 House members voted to continue giving federal funds to this organization. Who were they?

More on that in a moment. The Times story continues…

Bolstered by conservative news media outlets, Republicans have been on a crusade against the group for months, accusing it of voter-registration fraud and claiming it was being protected by Democrats who benefited from its political activities. Matters escalated when some Acorn workers were videotaped offering advice to conservative activists who were posing as people interested in establishing a prostitution business.

This whole paragraph intends to deflect attention and keep something as objectively bad as this scandal a partisan scuffle. Not only did Republicans accuse ACORN of voter-registration fraud, ACORN was found to have committed that fraud, a point the Times conveniently overlooks. And why do they point out that the two citizens who investigated ACORN practices were “conservative activists”? Walter Lippman explains the thought control in such manipulation of words in his famous book Public Opinion.

About those 75 members of the House who want to continue giving ACORN taxpayer funding in spite of some proven corruption…

But the fact that there were 75 “no” votes is shocking, even for this Congress. All of the nays came from Democrats. Along with far-left backbenchers, they included Charles Rangel, Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and Henry Waxman, who heads the Energy and Commerce Committee. Both are key leaders in the ObamaCare effort.

Great. So they’re key to some legislation that still currently provides taxpayer funding for abortion.

These members are committed to an agenda above all else.

One of Acorn’s leading Congressional enablers has been Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts. Last year Mr. Frank appeared in a promotional video for “Acorn’s Grassroots Democracy Campaign,” and this year he led the effort to repeal a year-old legal provision barring groups from receiving housing subsidies while under indictment for voter fraud.

In other words, he led the effort to allow subsidies for groups under indictment for voter fraud.

The moral compass is broken, alright. True north has been replaced by hard left.

The Senate vote to cut off funding to ACORN was 83-7. Citizens groups have been paying attention to who was among those seven.

Despite these mounting scandals, Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania was one of only seven Senators who voted to continue funding ACORN.

“The Census has dropped all plans to use ACORN and the White House is running away from all ties with the notorious organization. Yet Senator Bob Casey still believes taxpayers should finance this corrupt operation.  No credible member of Congress can honestly defend the flow of millions of taxpayer dollars to this group, particularly someone who has touted their commitment to women and children,” said Brian Burch, President of Fidelis.

“Back in March, Senator Casey disappointed pro-life groups by voting to grant taxpayer dollars to organizations that perform abortions oversees. Now, citizens in Pennsylvania are stunned to learn that Senator Casey would vote to fund a corrupt organization willing to help smuggle young girls into our country to participate in an underage prostitution ring,” said Burch.

“Senator Casey ran in 2006 as a pro-family and pro-life Democrat.  We urge Senator Casey to immediately distance himself from Acorn, and to take back his vote in favor of the group,” said Burch.

Former Congressman J.C. Watts famously said “Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking.” Right now, everybody’s watching.
