‘Retro-fit the cross’

The Mt. Soledad War Memorial remains under siege.

This battle never ends. No victory has yet been final. The latest one is temporary at best.

The 20-year legal fight over the cross on Mount Soledad took another turn Tuesday when a federal appeals court ruled the towering landmark on public land in La Jolla is an unconstitutional sign of government favoring religion…

For now, opponents of the cross have prevailed. They have argued the Latin cross is an impermissible religious symbol on public land. Supporters have countered it is a secular landmark amid a larger memorial that honors military veterans and has no explicit religious meaning.

This is ridiculous. On morning television news, a former federal prosecutor was trying to explain the legal arguments to the show host, and he speculated that what should happen to ameliorate this is some re-tooling of the war memorial symbol, like “retro-fit the cross.” Or…’put a Star of David up there, and an Islamic crescent, and let’s just all get along.’

So why can’t we get along with the religious tolerance this country enjoyed when the Constitution was honored as written?
