“Put out into the deep”

I just got off the phone with my friends John Morales and Teresa Tomeo who are in the middle of an exciting event in Detroit you should know about, because it has great implications beyond Michigan. It’s the Courageous Companions of Christ fifth annual Catholic Conference for Men, and John estimates there are over 3,000 men there at the University of Detroit basketball arena. I heard a speaker in the background talking about living out the commitment to Christ and, you know, it takes courage to speak out like….and to listen. Which is what this is all about.

Across the Archdiocese of Detroit and across the world, men are coming together in parish and other local groups to grow deeper in their fellowship with the Lord and with one another.

In these faith-filled Men’s Fellowship Groups, young men and old are being restored in new and powerful ways to God, to their own personal holiness and well-being, to their wives, children and families, to their parishes, their Church, and their place as sons of God in the community at large.

Restoring the natural order in a culture that denies transcendent values is necessary in these troubled times, but the good news is that it’s happening. All over the place.

At this event alone, already this morning, men have heard a powerful talk from former Chrysler Chairman John Riccardo about the need to put faith and family before everything else. And he was followed by his son, Fr. John Riccardo, who Morales describes as “a young Fulton Sheen”, to give an idea of his compelling message.

It may be a dreary looking and lazy Saturday morning for a lot of folks, but in my email this morning and on that call, I’m hearing some awesome news. And this is only part of it. More coming down the road on what else is brewing out there…

Meanwhile, check out John’s Champions of Faith DVD soon to be released (it’s amazing), and Teresa’s new book “Noise – How Our Media-Saturated Culture Dominates Lives and Dismantles Families”. Things are shaking, and it’s a good rumble.
